Due to recently passed State and Local Laws, it is easier than ever to get an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in California. ADUs, short for Accessory Dwelling Units, are also known as a Guest Houses or 2nd Unit. ADUs are very popular in California as a means of generating rental Income, providing housing for family and friends, and increasing property values.
In California, you can add up to two Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to your property. Starting in 2020, you can now build up to 1,200 square feet detached ADUs. There are now shorter approval periods, and Homeowners Associations (HOAs) nor (Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) can reasonably prohibit development of ADUs or JADUs.
